The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing assistance to those who are on active duty or those who have been previously deployed. It defines its mission as: “To foster camaraderie among United States veterans of overseas conflicts. To serve our veterans, the military and our communities. To advocate on behalf of all veterans.” The benefits and rights the VFW aims to provide are educational, such as the ones covered under the Post-9/11 GI Bill, progressive health and recognition benefits for servicewomen, and national recognition for veterans as a whole. The VFW has actively worked to provide these rights since after the Spanish American War in 1899 when veterans of that conflict arrived home without pensions or medical care. As of 2018, VFW has a total of over 1.8 million official members in over 6,000 posts.
